Lindane Shampoo
Lindane Shampoo is used for the effective treatment of lice and their eggs.  Lindane should only be used after other treatments have failed to eliminate the lice, or if the patient is unable to use other, safer medications.  Lindane Shampoo should only be used according to your physician's instructions.  Do not give your Lindane Shampoo to anyone else, even if their symptoms are the same as yours.  It may harm them.  Keep Lindane Shampoo out of the reach of children.

The information found on this site is to be used for general informative use only.  You should consult your physician for more information if you are considering using Lindane Shampoo.

Lindane Shampoo Ingredients:

Active Ingredient: Lindane.
Inactive Ingredients: trolamine lauryl sulfate, polysorbate 60, acetone and water

Lindane, as described above, should be used along with an effective treatment program.  Please click here for a list of other steps to take in eliminating lice.

You should not use Lindane shampoo:

 - As a preventative measure.  Lindane will only kill lice and nits that are already present in your hair.

 - If you have or have had seizures, "fits", or convulsions in the past.

 - If you have used Lindane Shampoo in the past few months.  You should consult a doctor before using it a second time.

 - Unless all other treatment options have failed.

 - If you have had a bad reaction to a Lindane treatment in the past.  Do not use Lindane Shampoo again.

 - If you have open or crusted (scabbed) sores on your head and neck, or lots of broken skin.

 - If treatment is needed for a premature or young baby.  They are especially susceptible to the negative side-effects of Lindane treatment.

 - If you have scabies.  There is a separate Lotion that is to be used in those case.

 - If you are allergic to Lindane Shampoo or any of its ingredients.  Please click here for a complete listing of the ingredients.

Active Ingredient: Lindane.
Inactive Ingredients: trolamine lauryl sulfate, polysorbate 60, acetone and water

 - While you are breast feeding.  The Shampoo may get into your breast milk and affect the baby which may cause the baby to get sick.  Ask your doctor for a safer medication.

You should notify your doctor if you:

 - Have used Lindane Shampoo within the last few months.

 - Have ever had a seizure problem a condition that could increase your chances of getting a seizure.  Some examples of risk inducing conditions include a head injury, tumor in the spinal chord or brain, cirrhosis of the liver, or heavy alcohol drinking.

 - Have HIV or AIDs

 - Are pregnant.  Lindane Shampoo may be able to affect your baby.  You should ask your physician about safer medications.

 - Have a sexual partner and your lice is located in the pubic area.  Your partner should consult a physician so that they can be treated if necessary and will not be able to give the lice back to you.  You should not share your Lindane Shampoo.

Tell your doctor about all of the medications you are currently taking including prescription drugs, non-prescription drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements.  Some medications will increase the likelihood of having seizures while using Lindane Shampoo.  You should especially consult your physician if you are taking any sedatives (i.e. sleeping pills).

How do I use Lindane Shampoo?

Before you apply
When washing it off
When applying the Shampoo
After washing off the Shampoo

Before you put it on:

 - Make sure you know how to use the Shampoo as indicated by your doctor.

 - If you are applying it to another person's hair, be sure to use special gloves made of latex with neoprene, nitrile, or sheer vinyl.  You should not use natural latex gloves because the Lindane can go through that kind of glove.  Keep the gloves on until the shampoo has been washed out of your hair.  Wash your hands thoroughly when finished.

 - Be sure that your hair and neck do not have any other oil, cream, or shampoo in it.  Oils can make Lindane seep through your skin faster and can increase the risk of having seizures.
When applying the Shampoo:

 - Shake the bottle of Lindane Shampoo well.

 - Be sure that your hair is clean and dry before applying.  Do not wash your hair within 1 hour before using the Lindane Shampoo.  Use regular shampoo without conditioner and dry your hair.

 - Use only enough Lindane Shampoo to wet your hair and scalp.  Do not add water to your hair at this point.  You should also put Lindane Shampoo on the short hairs on the back of your neck.

 - Keep the shampoo on your hair for 4 minutes.  Use a clock to time yourself.

 - Do not use a shower cap or any other sort of covering on your head during the 4 minutes.

 - Close the bottle with the leftover Lindane Shampoo and throw it away in a trash can out of the reach of children.
When you are supposed to wash it off:

 - After the 4 minutes has passed, lather (or soap up)  the Lindane Shampoo.  Use only a small amount of warm water when lathering.  Hot water is not safe to use.  You can then wash the Lindane Shampoo off of your head.  You should again use warm water, not hot water, to wash out the Shampoo.  Do not leave any of the Lindane Shampoo on your head or hair.  It will not kill anymore lice and it may continue to seep into your skin and cause serious side-effects, such as seizures.
After you wash off Lindane Shampoo:

 - Towel dry your hair.  Use a nit comb or tweezers to remove the dead nits (lice eggs) from the hair.  You may need someone else to do this for you.

 - All recently worn clothing (including underwear, pajamas, and hats), used sheets, pillowcases, and towels should be washed in very hot water or dry-cleaned.

 - Do not use Lindane Shampoo again.  If you think you need to use it again, you need to check with your physician to find out whether or not it is safe to use again and when it will be safe to use again.

You may still experience itchiness after using Lindane Shampoo.  This does not mean that you need to reapply Lindane Shampoo.  Even after all of the lice have been killed, they can still cause you to itch for a long period of time.  Lindane Shampoo may even increase the discomfort of the itchiness after it has been used.  Consult your physician about ways to soothe the itch.

What should be avoided while using Lindane Shampoo?
 - Do not put Lindane Shampoo in your mouth because it is very poisonous if taken by mouth. If you do get Lindane Shampoo in your mouth, or swallow Lindane Shampoo, call your area poison control center immediately and get emergency medical help.

 - Be careful to not get Lindane Shampoo in your eyes.  If it does get in your eyes, flush your eyes with water right away.  Get immediate medical attention if your eyes continue to hurt.

 - Do not get Lindane Shampoo on your hands.  Be sure to use special gloves made of latex with neoprene, nitrile, or sheer vinyl.  You should not use natural latex gloves because the Lindane can go through that kind of glove.  Keep the gloves on until the shampoo has been washed out of your hair.  Wash your hands thoroughly when finished.

 - Do not use Lindane Shampoo if you are pregnant unless you have discussed this with your physician.  Do not apply Lindane Shampoo to others if you are pregnant.  See above information on hand protection if you do have to apply Lindane Shampoo to others.

 - Do not use any oils on your hair or skin just before using Lindane Shampoo.  Oils include oil-based conditioners and hair products.
